Chrysanthemums in Autumn is a collaborative piece between painter Elsie Di Cassio and Marcia Brown Smith needleartist. The beautiful hand painted oval box was inspired by a unique scrimshaw box on exhibit at the Boston Society Museum in Boston, MA. It features a graceful chrysanthemum garland trailing around the box exterior. The painted lid depicts a settlement in autumn over a spray of chrysanthemums. The box interior features a reproduction o the painted floral design in needleart on 32ct white linen using rich autumn-toned silks and flosses by Gloriana and Weeks Dye Works. Beautiful chrysanthemums sit atop the lids of two constructed inner compartments on either side of a handsome scissor channel. Each exterior lid features a hand-turned wood and bead knob to facilitate access to the projects interior chambers. The two dimensional chrysanthemum motifs are stitched using brick, padded satin stitch, detached buttonhole, leaf, stem and woven basket stitch. The custom monogram and provenance found on the box's inner lid are stitched in cross stitch over one thread. Luscious check and coordinated check/stripe silks are used for the linings and scissor channel. Marcia will include stitching instruction and demonstration of the complete assembly of the project in class.
