Forget Me Nots In Stitches

Lauren was raised on Cleveland's "West Side" where her paternal Great Aunt taught Lauren and her sister how to embroider. She remembers beginning on stamped Tea Towels at around age 7, and has been embroidering ever since. Her formal education was completed at Jane Addams Vocational High School where her focus was on fashion design/illustration and dressmaking/tailoring! She also attended Cleveland's Institute of Art during her summers. Upon her graduation from High School she won an Eva's Wingert Scholarship to the Fashion Institute of Technology, majoring in journalism and fashion communications. After graduating in 1966, Lauren returned to Cleveland to work at the May Co. as an assistant buyer of girl's pre-teen clothing.

She began designing Counted Cross Stitch in 1978, in 1985 opened a shop offering classes and has since been teaching throughout the USA and abroad. Although Lauren no longer has a shop she continues to teach at local EGA, Specialty Shops, and Special Event Weekends such as Celebration, Sampler Gathering, and Just Cross Stitch Williamsburg. She has also been featured in Fine Lines, Early American Life, and Just Cross Stitch. We are honored to have Lauren as one of our teachers.

Class #205
Garden by the Sea

Teacher: Lauren Sauer
Max: 16 students (Min: 6 students)
Level: Intermediate
Description: Unpubished, Exclusive Teaching Piece

Price: $245.00
Scheduled: Thursday, 9:00am - 12:45pm

The flowers which grow in such colorfully-gay profusion in formal gardens, and all along the coastal roads of the Atlantic Ocean, never fail to bring me pleasure every time I have occasion to drive out to the shore. Not having, at present, a garden of my own, I am left to gardening with a threaded needle! Join me, won't you, as we explore an embroidered garden, full of visual and textural interest, all the while developing a 'color wheel', using a wide variety of familiar stitches, some used in different ways. Simple 'pattern darning' is employed for the background of each small 'plot'. The Embroidered Design Area is about 6 x 6-inches.

This project is embroidered on 35-count 'Lambswool', using a gorgeous assortment of threads: 36 shades of Soie Cristal (the Caron collection) are complemented with additional threads from The Gentle Art, The Thread Gatherer, and Weeks Dye Works. A small m-o-p button is attached at the garden's center. I mounted my original Garden by The Sea in the lid of one of Old Colonial's beautiful boxes (not included in the kit cost).

Kit includes: 36 shades of threads, Linen, Needles, Small button, and Chart.

Please bring light or magnification if needed.

The bag is embroidered entirely in red silk on sand 32ct Belfast linen using blackwork techniques and a variety of specialty stitches. Nun's stitches are used in the 6" x 7" bag's assembly. Two smalls have been designed to complement your bag - a "flower of May" scissor fob and a "sacred cod" scissors rest. The filling for the cod's rest is not included.

Celebrating voyages and journeys of all sorts, this elegant project is designed to hold any treasures you collected along the way. Embroidered on 32 count Light Sand linen and stitched entirely in a luscious array of red Soie Cristal silk threads from the Caron collection. The drawstring bag is stitched using a Blackwork technique and is lined with silk. The pretty ribbon is used for the drawstring closure. Two whimsical 'smalls' have been designed to complement: a 'flower of May' Scissors' Fob (based on the stern decoration of Mayflower II, in Plymouth harbor), and a 'sacred Cod' Scissors' Rest (the fish that saved the Pilgrims from starvation). Bon voyage! Finished size is about 6 x 7-inches.

Class #404
Sleeping Beauty, Awakened

Teacher: Lauren Sauer

Price: $185.00
Scheduled: Saturday, 9:00am - 1:45pm

The exquisitely-beautiful, 18th-Century, double-band, whitework sampler is near-exact re-creation based on what was formerly in the collection of Mary Jo and David Johnson. The original, worked by 'CMB', ANNO 1759', was embroidered on an incredibly-fine 60-threads-to-the-inch (warp and weft) linen, using, almost entirely, knotted stitches, worked in silk, and linen or cotton threads. A near-twin of this sampler appears on page 77 in Carol Humphrey's Samplers, a Fitzwilliam Museum Handbook. Without a doubt, this sampler is one of the most beautiful I have ever had the pleasure of spending time with! 'CMB' measures about 4½ x 10-inches, while the re-creation measures about 7 x 15½.

Kit for your 21st-Century version includes 40-count 'Off White', Au Ver a Soie 'Soie d'Alger' and 100/3 spooled silk, and Londonderry spooled linen thread.

Note: This is the only sampler I have ever stitched twice. Shown in the snap is a long, single band version worked in color; this information will be shared in class.

Please bring light or magnification if needed.
