Forget Me Nots In Stitches

Lauren was raised on Cleveland's "West Side" where her paternal Great Aunt taught Lauren and her sister how to embroider. She remembers beginning on stamped Tea Towels at around age 7, and has been embroidering ever since. Her formal education was completed at Jane Addams Vocational High School where her focus was on fashion design/illustration and dressmaking/tailoring! She also attended Cleveland's Institute of Art during her summers. Upon her graduation from High School she won an Eva's Wingert Scholarship to the Fashion Institute of Technology, majoring in journalism and fashion communications. After graduating in 1966, Lauren returned to Cleveland to work at the May Co. as an assistant buyer of girl's pre-teen clothing.

She began designing Counted Cross Stitch in 1978, in 1985 opened a shop offering classes and has since been teaching throughout the USA and abroad. Although Lauren no longer has a shop she continues to teach at local EGA, Specialty Shops, and Special Event Weekends such as Celebration, Sampler Gathering, and Just Cross Stitch Williamsburg. She has also been featured in Fine Lines, Early American Life, and Just Cross Stitch. We are honored to have Lauren as one of our teachers.

Right off the bat I am not a department at beading but I do love beads! I love how they look and feel. Peyote beadwork is especially lovely, visually! Delicate, fragile and fluid glass beads will create three small flowered projects including a very small open topped pouch embroidered on one side and beaded on the other. The second is a small open topped shoulder bag beaded on both sides with an inside pocket and the third is a tiny "True" Peyote bag tag all stitched on 28 count Natural linen to create this 3½ x 4" for the larger of the three projects. Stitches used in this project will include Backstitch, Cross Stitch over two and Smyrna Cross.

Students will be sent a shopping list of supplies for the colors that she or he prefers, to include beads, threads and matching lining with shoulder chain.

Kit includes: Charts, Diagrams, Linen, needles, accent beads, jump rings, interfacing and finishing directions, some additional finishing supplies will be needed.

According to Betty Ring (See Vol. 1 of "Girlhood Embroidery") Strawberry bordered Samplers were very popular in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania. Other characteristics included neat white houses, flocks of birds and Symmetrical trees with bold trunks shooting vertically up through the foliage. Although not dated this very neat and precise little sampler may have been from the area of the keystone state. Our modern version is worked on 32 Count Summer Straw linen using 7 lovely shades of Au Ver A Soie silk threads with 7 shades of Sampler Threads with a touch of Simply Wool. Stitches include Cross Stitch over two, Queen Stitch, and Long Armed Cross.
