Forget Me Nots In Stitches

Lauren was raised on Cleveland's "West Side" where her paternal Great Aunt taught Lauren and her sister how to embroider. She remembers beginning on stamped Tea Towels at around age 7, and has been embroidering ever since. Her formal education was completed at Jane Addams Vocational High School where her focus was on fashion design/illustration and dressmaking/tailoring! She also attended Cleveland's Institute of Art during her summers. Upon her graduation from High School she won an Eva's Wingert Scholarship to the Fashion Institute of Technology, majoring in journalism and fashion communications. After graduating in 1966, Lauren returned to Cleveland to work at the May Co. as an assistant buyer of girl's pre-teen clothing.

She began designing Counted Cross Stitch in 1978, in 1985 opened a shop offering classes and has since been teaching throughout the USA and abroad. Although Lauren no longer has a shop she continues to teach at local EGA, Specialty Shops, and Special Event Weekends such as Celebration, Sampler Gathering, and Just Cross Stitch Williamsburg. She has also been featured in Fine Lines, Early American Life, and Just Cross Stitch. We are honored to have Lauren as one of our teachers.

Class #201
Mistress L's Sampler of Bands, Emblems and Motifs

Teacher: Lauren Sauer

Level: Intermediate / Advanced
Description: Exclusive Teaching Piece

Price: $275.00
Scheduled: Thursday, 9:00am-12:45pm

The 17th and 18th century band samplers have always held a fascination for Lauren, she has admired and been amazed by many, beautiful examples of needlework in museums and private collections. Every one is unique and tells a story. Puzzles, riddles and emblems all had meanings hidden within them. You were "in the know" or you could "get the message."

This band sampler has been organized in four sections and it may be embroidered exactly as the original or abbreviated by eliminating a band here or there. Or, the bands may be rearranged. These alternatives will be part of class discussion.

Section one (the first six inches or so) is comprised of 13 narrow bands and two alphabets, and the numbers one through ten.

Section two features several lines spoken by Oberon in A Midsummer's Night Dream, with each line separated by a more involved band.

Section three gives the stitcher a place to get carried away with the use of color and texture, especially in the band depicting the Three Ladies.

Section Four anchors the sampler with areas for personalization.

Lauren's original sampler is stitched on 40ct off white linen using a colorful array of silk and hand painted/over dyed cotton threads with a touch of shimmer provided by Accentuate thread. An interesting variety of stitches are used, the dominant one being the Montenegrin, which is worked over three as it was in the 17th century.

Kit includes: Charts, diagrams, color images, 40ct linen, silk and cotton threads, needles. Remember to bring magnification and lighting if needed.

Class #302
Summerfield Smalls: Part I

Teacher: Lauren Sauer

Level: Intermediate
Description: Exclusive Teaching Piece

Price: $158.00
Scheduled: Friday, 10:00am-1:45pm

This series of smalls was inspired by two things: Lauren's love of flowers, especially the summer ones - the cheery black-eyed Susan's, the stately sunflowers and a pattern she discovered on the inside of a security envelope.

This set includes a 3 inch square scissor rest, a scissor fob and a tiny felt lined box to hold your treasures.

Each small works up quickly using a variety of well-known stitches. The Nun's stitch is used to finish elegantly and to join layers of linen together. The smalls will rest inside the little box when they are not in use.

Kit includes: Chart, color images, 30ct off white linen, Sampler and Simply Shaker threads, needles, balsa wood box, ribbon, finishing materials. Bring extra magnification/lighting if needed.
