Forget Me Nots In Stitches

Lauren was raised on Cleveland's "West Side" where her paternal Great Aunt taught Lauren and her sister how to embroider. She remembers beginning on stamped Tea Towels at around age 7, and has been embroidering ever since. Her formal education was completed at Jane Addams Vocational High School where her focus was on fashion design/illustration and dressmaking/tailoring! She also attended Cleveland's Institute of Art during her summers. Upon her graduation from High School she won an Eva's Wingert Scholarship to the Fashion Institute of Technology, majoring in journalism and fashion communications. After graduating in 1966, Lauren returned to Cleveland to work at the May Co. as an assistant buyer of girl's pre-teen clothing.

She began designing Counted Cross Stitch in 1978, in 1985 opened a shop offering classes and has since been teaching throughout the USA and abroad. Although Lauren no longer has a shop she continues to teach at local EGA, Specialty Shops, and Special Event Weekends such as Celebration, Sampler Gathering, and Just Cross Stitch Williamsburg. She has also been featured in Fine Lines, Early American Life, and Just Cross Stitch. We are honored to have Lauren as one of our teachers.

This colorful pocketbook was inspired by these lovely examples found among the pages of books about antique needlework, and in museum collections. Most of all the ones I have studied are covered with the most amazing vividly colored and intricately worked flame patterns, also called Florentine, Hungarian, Irish and Bargello. When folded it measures 4¾" x 6" stitched on 35ct Lambswool with shades of green. The outside front of the pocketbook features a miniature scene depicting a large manor house perched on a grassy bank. The outside back provides a place for all sorts of personalization. Open the pocketbook up to find two embroidered pockets, each one with vibrant silks and one with gusseted sides. Beneath each is a smaller secret one. The outside edges are bound with a complimentary shade of green twill tape from Japan. Stitches being taught Four Sided, Queen, and several Flame or Florentine patterns.

Kit includes: Charts, diagrams, text, 35ct linen, Soie Cristale silk and Waterlilies threads, Gentle Art Sampler and Shaker threads, needles and all finishing supplies.

Remember to bring magnification and lighting if needed.

Although I love the sea shore, I'd rather be watching the water from land. This miniature scene is viewed from the vantage point of a porch, and is embroidered on 35ct off white linen using Sampler and Simply Shaker threads. The embroidered focus of this charming piece is the frame done in three different Herringbone variations, and the ocean and sky done in pattern darning. The finished size is 3" square. The completed sea scene will be mounted on a miniature artist's canvas. Pop onto your easel and place on a shelf or side table.

Kit includes: Chart, diagrams, 35ct off white linen, Sampler and Simply Shaker threads, needles, miniature artists canvas and easel and finishing materials.

Bring extra magnification/lighting if needed.

Every English home - great or small has a conservatory attached to it, or so it seems! Avid gardeners, they are, even in the dead of the winter. Hence the inspiration for this sweet little carrier! Both sides of the carrier provide ample room to stitch several colorful flowers. Pots of geraniums and sunflowers are hidden beneath the flap. The front is flourished with wildflowers and topiaries grace the back. The Valise carrier is lined with silk. Yours may vary due to availability of what I used. Banding of ribbon finishes the edges. The front flap remains closed with a strategically placed magnet.

Kit includes: Chart/diagrams, 30ct off white linen, fibers, needles, ribbon, Mother of Pearl Button bead, and all finishing materials.

Bring extra magnification/lighting if needed.
