This fascinating sampler is clearly a teaching sampler with a total of 4 different alphabets as well as numbers and initials. The cartouche at the bottom with a central square which looks like darning and the cross swords give this piece a military feel. I believe the crowns were added, to show that the person knew how to stitch them, should they be employed to do so. But who was GR? Why two sets of initials FEK and AM at the bottom by the date 1738? Join me for this fascinating lecture, where I will sort out the mysteries and reveal the answers.
