Nantucket's Petticoat Row
Teaching site: NH

Teacher: Marcia Brown Smith
Max: 24 students (Min: 6 students)
Level: Beginner / Intermediate
Description: Exclusive teaching piece

Price: $235.00
Scheduled: Thursday, 10:00am-3:45pm (1 hour Lunch break)

While their beloved ship captains were at sea in search of whale oil, the women of New England became industrious and enterprising by opening businesses along the busy waterfronts. These women created domestic commerce to sustain their families while their valiant seamen were at sea and the store fronts became known as Petticoat Row. To commemorate these women, the Nantucket Petticoat Row is created on 32 count linen using the finest silks and overdyes from Gloriana and Thread Gatherer to represent the charming cobblestone Main Street, the gay variety of storefronts, the busy docks and the bustling ship's chandlery and the local provisioner. The elevated docks make one feel as though the tides are lapping at the pilings waiting for the next ship's arrival. The classic Main Street landmark, the Abiah Folger Franklin fountain which is festooned with flowers all summer greet visitors with a riot of stitched flowers. Two ships wait to offload their cargo of oil barrels and provision for their next trip to sea. The many textures of this project require a broad variety of stitches such as the Scotch, the wave stitch, herringbone, Gobelin, spider, cross and satin and more on Zweigart 32-ct. seafoam linen. Widow's walks atop the busy storefront buildings with their cascading flower boxes allow the waiting mistresses to gaze out to sea anticipating the arrival of their Captains and seamen. These elements are appropriately presented in a handsome 8 x 8" Nantucket basket. All stitching and finishing steps will be carefully demonstrated and applied in class with Marcia.

Kit includes: Basket, Linen, Fibers, Mounting materials, doctors flannel, beads, skirtex, and instructions.

Please bring extra lighting and or magnification if needed.

Trio of Projects
Teaching site: NH

Teacher: Candy Scott
Max: 30 students (Min: 10 students)
Level: Intermediate
Description:

Price: $138.00
Scheduled: Thursday, 1:00pm-4:45pm

Using a design based on the layouts of Norfolk samplers, I have designed a trio of projects—a bookmark, a needle book and a scissor fob, with three different finishes which are stitched on #36 Cocoa linen from Weeks Dye Works. The bookmark is my "5 minute finish", the scissor fob is finished using a picot edge and the needle book uses a simple stitch for attaching linen to wool.

The design allows for "making it your own" by interchanging scaled motives of a deer, a basket, a tree and/or your initials to fit perfectly into the lozenges of each project. There are two options for your initials. You will do the designing here. Each finishing technique will be demonstrated and you will have hands-on practice with each. You will pull threads, stitch a few cross stitches, back stitch and practice a picot edge and attaching stitch.

Kit includes: #36 Weeks Dye Works Cocoa linen for a needle book, a book mark and a matching scissor fob, Needle Point Inc. threads in soft tones of greens, brown, gold and red, Weeks Dye Works wool, ribbon, card, adhesive and a plastic sleeve for the book mark as well as materials for practice. Come find something new for your workbasket from our Workbasket.

Please bring lighting and extra magnification if needed.

The project features a lined rectangular box base (4"x1") to anchor the two basket-shaped panel's front and back. Each panel has its own stitched handle for carrying and for closure with a magnetic snap. When open, the basket lies flat and houses storage for scissors, ruler and pencil. The rectangular base is the perfect storage area for needle cases and thimbles. There is a unique little basket on the inside of one panel created from wool roving with a needle-woven overlay complete with fabric base and handle finished with bead fastenings and wooden topknot. The small basket lid is stitched with complementary motifs and flap with tab. A heart pincushion completes the interior. There are pockets hidden behind the exterior stitching areas featuring banded motifs with ribbon embellishment. The focus of this design is on woven techniques and stitches.

September Morning finds you walking down a fashionable avenue in Paris looking for a very special object to take home with you. Tucked away in a display window's corner, your eyes are drawn to a delicate carton. The carton is decorated with soft watercolor-style flowers, leaves and vines.

You step inside the shop for a closer look. Excitement fills the air as you recognize the carton to be a needlework box. The shop attendant sees your interest and takes the needlework box to a viewing area. The shop becomes silent. Your eyes follow the shape of the box-rectangular, about 6" wide x 3" deep x 1¾" high. The slanted sides are decorated with tiny silk stitches that resemble watercolor paints and are worked on a warm antique-colored linen background. The four box sides are attached to one another and meet with panels at the top creating a functional box top that ties with a wonderful vintage-looking silk ribbon. You notice that each of the four box sides are attached to these linen panels to create the top of the box. When the ribbon is untied and the box top panels fold back, you view the silk-lined interior and see that it is filled with tiny trinkets and tools. A thimble hides in one corner, buttons and bows adorn a tufted mattress pincushion, and you see a tiny needle book with scissors minder. The box's interior has silk pockets; each is filled with tiny treasures, paper, mementos and needle necessities.

Holding your purchase, you walk to your hotel room, thinking of the needlework person who owned this treasure before you and about the treasures you will add to this beautiful September Morning memory.

Kit includes: 32-count linen with hand-dyed and solid silk fibers with interior silk fabric, Luxurious taffeta linen, vintage-looking silk ribbon that will be specially dyed for this project. Along with Color graphs and diagrams with colored instructions for completing the class project. Detailed instruction and color pictures for working a special new stitch Jackie created for joining the panels together. A tiny preface piece of linen will be supplied to practice this "Jackie's Scallop Join" to add to your finishing repertoire.

Students have to be in class to receive kits.

Please bring lighting and extra magnification if needed.
