Level: Beginner / Intermediate
Description:

Price: $168.00
Scheduled: Thursday, 10:00am - 12:45pm

This very rare 15.5 x 12.5 sampler is a joy to stitch on Summer Khaki evenweave 30 count and stitched over 2. The stag is lying down and looking over his shoulder, all fairly common for the period of the late 18th century but Ann, who stitched this must have had a sense of humour because she has her stag eating a leaf. I have looked and looked but cannot find another sampler where this occurs. It is stitched in greens and golds with splashes of red's, oranges, and lilac. The stitches used are cross stitch, over 2, chain stitch and lazy daisy stitch for the bee, and some satin stitch for the centre of the flowers. The hill is stitched in cross stitch but the different colours gives it real shape. This is a beautiful sampler and worthy of anyone's collection.

Kit includes: 30 Count Summer Khaki linen, Mill silk threads, instructions and charts.

Please bring extra lighting and or magnification if needed.

The flowers which grow in such colorfully-gay profusion in formal gardens, and all along the coastal roads of the Atlantic Ocean, never fail to bring me pleasure every time I have occasion to drive out to the shore. Not having, at present, a garden of my own, I am left to gardening with a threaded needle! Join me, won't you, as we explore an embroidered garden, full of visual and textural interest, all the while developing a 'color wheel', using a wide variety of familiar stitches, some used in different ways. Simple 'pattern darning' is employed for the background of each small 'plot'. The Embroidered Design Area is about 6 x 6-inches.

This project is embroidered on 35-count 'Lambswool', using a gorgeous assortment of threads: 36 shades of Soie Cristal (the Caron collection) are complemented with additional threads from The Gentle Art, The Thread Gatherer, and Weeks Dye Works. A small m-o-p button is attached at the garden's center. I mounted my original Garden by The Sea in the lid of one of Old Colonial's beautiful boxes (not included in the kit cost).

The Sarah Drafgate Sampler dated 1688 is the oldest sampler in the Hampshire Archives which is based in Winchester the ancient capital of England. This gorgeous sampler uses a wide variety of stitches including Holbein, Algerian eye and Montenegrin to name but a few and it is an advanced stitching piece as when it is finished it is only by the alphabets that you can tell which is the back and which is the front. The colours; shades of red, green and gold are used to paint a picture that is utterly charming. It is stitched on 28 cream linen and all the stitches will be taught in the class as we make a small biscornu to learn the stitches prior to stitching the main sampler. In order to make sure that there is enough time to get through everything I would ask that you enroll early so that a pre-stitching kit can be sent to you and that you stitch the outline in Montenegrin before you come to class.

Students should bring to class a previously stitched item no larger than 4" x 6", enough coordinating backing fabric to cover 3 boards, small piece of ribbon for bottom strap, a matching skein of floss for corded trim, and craft scissors and fabric scissors along with normal supplies. If a stitched item is not able to be brought to class, instruction can still be given with plain fabric. This is a small class, giving students the ability to be able to completely finish the Stand Up item in the classroom, or close to finishing.

Kit includes: Instruction Manual, Mat board, batting, sewing thread, and needles. No glue will be used in this project.

Please bring a hand towel to class to protect your needlework while working.

The Ann Flack Needle Case
Teaching site: NH

Teacher: Sue Blomley
Max: 30 students (Min: 8 students)
Level: Beginner / Intermediate
Description:

Price: $145.00
Scheduled: Saturday, 9:00am - 12:45pm

This pretty etui is taken from a full size sampler from 1778. It is stitched in shades of Terracotta and Green with an old gold silk lining to hold your essential equipment. The linen is a mushroom colour and 35 ct. but the evenweave makes it easy to see and stitch. The stitching is one strand over 1 thread, and unusually this sampler has a little cat on it. We have copied the cat onto the ruler and threadwinder which you will be able to order during the class. In the class you will learn the details and tips about the stitching, then detailed instructions for the finishing of your project. This is a wonderful collectors piece, copying an unusual sampler (very few samplers have cats on them) to make a practical piece of embroidery you will be able to use for years to come.

Kit includes: Mushroom 35 Count Linen, Mill Silks, Finishing materials with instructions and charts.

The exquisitely-beautiful, 18th-Century, double-band, whitework sampler is near-exact re-creation based on what was formerly in the collection of Mary Jo and David Johnson. The original, worked by 'CMB', ANNO 1759', was embroidered on an incredibly-fine 60-threads-to-the-inch (warp and weft) linen, using, almost entirely, knotted stitches, worked in silk, and linen or cotton threads. A near-twin of this sampler appears on page 77 in Carol Humphrey's Samplers, a Fitzwilliam Museum Handbook. Without a doubt, this sampler is one of the most beautiful I have ever had the pleasure of spending time with! 'CMB' measures about 4½ x 10-inches, while the re-creation measures about 7 x 15½.

Kit for your 21st-Century version includes 40-count 'Off White', Au Ver a Soie 'Soie d'Alger' and 100/3 spooled silk, and Londonderry spooled linen thread.

Note: This is the only sampler I have ever stitched twice. Shown in the snap is a long, single band version worked in color; this information will be shared in class.

Please bring light or magnification if needed.

Join me for 3 hours to build a basket of smalls to rest in this Oval braided basket. We will stitch on 32 Count off white linen using over dyed threads and of course black floss. We will go over some information about the embellishment of clothing. I am not a historian on this work but growing up with a grandmother and mother who taught me the advantage of adding embroidery to your clothing gives me inspiration to modernize and bring color into my designing efforts. We will work on setting up all your pieces for finishing while stitching on one of the smalls. The colors I have chosen are a perfect match to compliment the lining material. The smalls will include a Scissor Rest for the bottom of the basket, Needle Threader Case, Fob for your favorite scissors, and a tiny Needlebook.

Kit includes: Basket, Charts, Lining, Templates, Interfacing, Wool Felt, Needles, Threader, Ribbon, Over-dyed Floss, Linen, and all finishing instructions.

Jacobean Pin Disc
Teaching site: NH

Teacher: Maureen Appleton-Sorenson
Max: 30 students (Min: 6 students)
Level: Beginner / Intermediate
Description:

Price: $125.00
Scheduled: Saturday, 2:00pm - 3:45pm

Would you gravitate to this design in a fabric shoppe? Chances are you would be drawn to these beautiful red colours. I have stitched this Pin Disc from the inspiration of this beautiful Jacobean fabric. This will be the back of your 2½" x 3" Pin Disc. Fourteen individually numbered DMC flosses create this design on 40 Count Sandstone 100% Linen. Of course it is stitched one over one. Who asked that? That is the reason I will be in class to erase your anxieties of this tiny stitch technique. It is most detailed and mastered with a delicate laying stitch on top of your linen. The design is solidly surrounded with the exact red hue as this fabric, and will be an identical match to the Jacobean piece. You will have red glass head long marking pins to add to your finished disc. Professional finishing techniques afford no worries to these techniques. The 100% hand dyed silk ribbon adds to its finishing details. This is sure to become a most welcome addition and necessary for your stitching nest.

Kit includes: Linen, Floss, Template, Warm and Natural stuffing, 100% silk ribbon custom hand dyed to match your disc.

Please bring extra lighting and magnification if needed.

It is clearly Hannah's final piece which she stitched at 11 years old with very fancy alphabets and a variety of crowns and initials. It could be a funeral sampler, note the urn, or a family tree sampler with all the initials. Come to the lecture and find out what we know about the history and times of this fascinating piece.
