Hannah Pope Putnam's 1750's Bag, Then and Now
Teacher: Marcia Brown Smith
Level: Intermediate
Description: Exclusive Teaching Piece
Price: $265.00
Scheduled: Thursday 9:00am-12:45pm
Hannah Pope Putnam's beaded bag was created in the mid 1700's and was worn to many social and military occasions. Hannah's father, General Israel Putnam, was an important military figure in the Revolutionary War and she was the wife of Vermont Representative John Winchester Dana. Originally Hannah's beautiful bag was done entirely in jewel-tone beads, featuring traditional floral motifs in roses and blue bells on a deep blue green background. The base of the bag is beaded in a cranberry geometric design. The original bag will be on view during class time.
For today's application, the design is reproduced in luscious silk fibers by Gloriana, J. L. Walsh, and Needlepoint, Inc. on Amsterdam blue 28ct Cashel linen. Today's lady will enjoy a slightly larger bag design adapted with a personalized back panel carrying the upper floral garland and the geometric motifs from front to back. The finished size is 9 x 14 x4 and includes a pocketed silk interior. The project includes 12 silk fibers, a history of the Putman family and their relevance to the Revolutionary War period. A collaboration with Donna Harney Handbags enable each student to take advantage of an exclusive offer for finishing services at a below market value unique to this class only.
Kit includes: 12 colors of silk fibers, linen, stripe silk lining, and ultra suede fabric for bag bottom, color graph, written instructions for stitching and finishing, historic Hannah Putnam information.

Mistress L's Sampler of Bands, Emblems and Motifs
Teacher: Lauren Sauer
Level: Intermediate / Advanced
Description: Exclusive Teaching Piece
Price: $275.00
Scheduled: Thursday, 9:00am-12:45pm
The 17th and 18th century band samplers have always held a fascination for Lauren, she has admired and been amazed by many, beautiful examples of needlework in museums and private collections. Every one is unique and tells a story. Puzzles, riddles and emblems all had meanings hidden within them. You were "in the know" or you could "get the message."
This band sampler has been organized in four sections and it may be embroidered exactly as the original or abbreviated by eliminating a band here or there. Or, the bands may be rearranged. These alternatives will be part of class discussion.
Section one (the first six inches or so) is comprised of 13 narrow bands and two alphabets, and the numbers one through ten.
Section two features several lines spoken by Oberon in A Midsummer's Night Dream, with each line separated by a more involved band.
Section three gives the stitcher a place to get carried away with the use of color and texture, especially in the band depicting the Three Ladies.
Section Four anchors the sampler with areas for personalization.
Lauren's original sampler is stitched on 40ct off white linen using a colorful array of silk and hand painted/over dyed cotton threads with a touch of shimmer provided by Accentuate thread. An interesting variety of stitches are used, the dominant one being the Montenegrin, which is worked over three as it was in the 17th century.
Kit includes: Charts, diagrams, color images, 40ct linen, silk and cotton threads, needles. Remember to bring magnification and lighting if needed.

Winter White Sampler
Teacher: Eileen Bennett
Level: Intermediate
Description: Published Design
Price: $138.00
Scheduled: Thursday, 10:00am-3:45pm
The 17th century was a fruitful time for women who stitched lace collars, cuffs and cravats along with other items to wear or decorate their homes. Some of these wonderful laces can be seen in the portraits painted by European artists of the period. Like paintings of the masters, these glorious lace patterns and stitches have stayed with us for centuries. We love them even in our technological times.
An alphabet and classic pattern bands are worked of white thread and comprise this diminutive 2.9" x 7 .8" design. Your initial in Lacis, a needle-lace technique, is the final flourish for this charming tribute to the period and this fun-to-stitch class is an introduction to White Work. Using DMC flosses and Size 80 Special Dentelles threads, you will focus on 25 "olde sampler" stitches: cross, double cross, long arm cross, Belgian cross, 2 sided Italian cross, flat (satin), satin stitch blocks, stroke (back) stitch, double back stitch, Colonial knots, Williamsburg stitch, queens, half queens, buttonhole bars, forbidden stitch, chain, fern, knit, small rice,3 insertion stitches, 2 pulled thread stitches which include four-sided and satin stitch filling and the lace making technique of Lacis. To learn the technique of Lacis, the class will make a scissor fob in addition to the sampler.
This small sampler was designed for a popular cross stitch magazine. Printing space always limits the amount of directions given: this class expands the needlework instructions.
35 count linen is provided but students may bring their favorite count to work upon. The design is 59 stitches wide x 136 stitches high. When supplying your own linen, add 6 inches to each measurement for framing and/or finishing.
Kit includes: 2 pieces of 35 count linen, 4 skeins of DMC, 1 ball of Special Dentelles, #24 and #26 needles, a 25 page instruction booklet which includes charting, stitch diagrams, with instruction sheets and numerous stitching hints, photo, washing instructions and a 3 page bibliography of sampler stitching. Bring an extra 6" hoop if preferred.

Otherwise sensible women in the 18th century loved geegaws that looked pretty and had secret uses to amuse and delight their guests and themselves. Here we have a rather overly developed strawberry that opens up to reveal needle and pin pages accompanied by tiny scissors. The outside plumpness makes a perfect pincushion while attending to your stitching. The top hinge is covered with embroidered felted wool, while the berry, composed of 36 count linen, is sprinkled over with an array of strawberry sampler motifs. The stitching is all in silk with silk ribbon bows to act as closures. Very definitely an heirloom in the making! Finishing techniques will be thoroughly demonstrated in class, with the mat board and lining included in the kit.
Kit includes: Linen, Gloriana and au Ver á Soie silk, felted wool, lining, interlining, mat board, scissors, instructions, and needles.
Students bring: light and magnification, if needed.

The popular "Busy Lizzie" is an undemanding, strong growing plant that blooms profusely. The botanical name "Impatiens" comes from the explosive and impatient way the seeds are expelled from the seed pods. This is a characteristic of the Balsam family, of which Busy Lizzie is a member.
As a child Jackie would spend many hours looking for, finding and then squeezing the Impatien seed pods. To her great delight, these seed pods would pop into a rounded shape. She has recreated this exploding seed pod into a functional etui. The plant's crisp leaves are oval in shape and slightly pointed and are created as the three outside stitched linen panels attached to the silk panels. The interior is stitched with tiny Impatien blooms in hand dyed pink and green silks. The fibers and soft silk fabric allows the etui to explode in size to store all your favorite tools.
Kit includes: All supplies to complete this project including color finishing instructions.

Level: Intermediate
Description: Unpublished Design
Price: $145.00

Clothing of the 17th century was richly embroidered. White work techniques replicating the time-consuming handmade lace were often teamed with the colored band designs.
Her Faire Hand Sampler is a combination of multi-colored bands, white-on-white embroidery and is a teaching tool for recreating 27 of these old and sometimes forgotten stitches of the period. Nineteen counted thread stitches are teamed with 8 pulled thread skills creating an English band sampler style of the period. For class purposes, a miniature stitch sampler has been created for learning the many techniques before applying thread and needle to the sampler project.
Stitches taught will be: cross, double cross, small cross, long arm cross, Belgium cross, marking cross, flat, (satin), flat stitch variation, stroke (back) stitch, double back stitch with bars, Colonial knots, four-sided, knit, queens, half queens, ribbed spider, woven spider, buttonhole bars, forbidden (Pekinese Stitch), and 8 pull thread stitches, including Algerian filling, cobblestone stitch filling, coil filling, Italian hem, satin stitch, satin stitch filling, thicket filling and window filling stitch.

Memories Under Glass
Teacher: Lynda Keske
Level: Intermediate
Description: Exclusive Teaching Piece Debut
Price: $85.00
Scheduled: Friday, 2:00-4:45pm
Lynda is so excited that she was able to get these lockets for a class project. The locket will become an heirloom piece that you will not find elsewhere. The manufacturer was contracted to make this for one company and they have discontinued it from their line. After this class there will be no more. The quality far exceeds those on the needlework market. The frame surrounds tempered beveled glass on the front and flat glass on the back, is nickel plated with a lobster claw closure. You can display your stitched piece on one side or both. The advantage of this locket is that is that it can be opened and closed many times to change your stitched piece. It can be worn as a necklace or it can be made into an ornament. There is plenty of room on the inside for two stitched pieces and is roomy enough on the front side for size 15 seed beads.
The front design has 10 stitches from Lynda's line of Sym-Stitching and the back design is a monogram (full alphabet provided). Sym-Stitching is short for symmography or you may be familiar with string art. Lynda has adapted this art to be used on fabric. You will be using silk floss from Carrie's Creation and Rainbow Gallery Petite Treasure Braid. Lynda will first teach you the stitches on large count fabric. If you are not crazy about the three linen color choices, you are invited to bring your own to substitutes.
Photos are difficult with beveled glass so the front pictures were taken from the back side and the beveled side is shown opened.
Kit includes: Locket packaged in a padded box, chart, easy to read instructions and diagrams, Fabric Flair in 2 sizes (28 and 36), Carrie's Creation silk floss, and Rainbow Gallery's Treasure Braid PH02, needle and surprise goodies.
Please bring to class: Small stretcher hoop, scissors, 6" x 6" cut of even-weave linen fabric for practice (25 or 28ct). Aida fabric will not work for the specialty stitches.

The Harvest Band Sampler
Teacher: Eileen Bennett
Level: Intermediate
Description: Unpublished Design
Price: $155.00
Scheduled: Saturday, 9:00am-12:45pm
Band sampler flourished in several European countries during the 17th century. The German two column style is lesser known than the long narrow format commonly worked by the English sampler makers. This project emulates the German style and is worked with a wide assortment of counted thread stitches in garden shades of greens, pinks, reds and browns. This class will allow format choices and ample linen is provided to work the design horizontally as photographed or vertically, in the English tradition.
Design motifs featured in the scattered motif section are garden critters of birds, beetles and snails, plus fruit and flowers, which are also in the band patterns. For class purposes, a miniature stitch sampler has been created for learning the many techniques before applying thread and needle to the project itself. As stitches are the foundation of all embroidery, the 28 "olde sampler" stitches will offer a bit of a challenge but will be a fun experience as well. The stitches will include: cross, double cross, small cross, long arm cross, Belgian cross, marking cross, flat (satin), satin stitch blocks, back stitch, double back stitch, double back stitch with bars, Bosnia, barrier, Colonial knots, four sided, Italian hem, knit, double leviathan, line stitches, oriental, queens, half queens, small Algerian eyes, small rice, two insertion stitches and two pulled thread stitches.
The class bonus will be lots of sampler history from Eileen, the expert.
Kit includes: 2 pieces of 35ct linen, 14 skeins of DMC floss, l ball of #80 Special Dentelles, #24 and #26 needles, a 35 page instruction booklet which shows charting, stitch diagrams with instruction sheets and numerous hints, a photo, washing instructions, historical notes and a bibliography of sampler stitching. Bring to class a 4 or 5 inch hoop if used, plus the usual supplies.

A plethora of silk threads both over-dyed and plain, are used to create all the fauna and flora. Surrounding the spindly legged animals and flowers are tent stitches that allow the motifs to become a rough square or rectangle. This technique is found in many 18th century pictures which keep all the tiny figures from becoming lost in the surrounding gobelin satin and mosaic stitches.
Finishing techniques for the band are fairly simple and can be accomplished with simple hand sewing. The process will be demonstrated in class and complete instructions will be given in class. 8" x 18" stretcher bars are highly recommended.
Please note: You must sign up before Celebrations begins as the baskets have to be shipped to NH. These baskets are in very short supply so it will be first come, first served. I have room for 24 students only.
Kit includes: Belfast linen, complete instructions, Gloriana, Pearsall's and Au ver a Soie silks, DMC floss, needles and a Nantucket basket. Please bring light and magnification if needed.
